The Santa Talk

Our little girl is growing up. Steve and I had to have the Santa talk this week. Brooke came to me about a week ago and said, "Mommy, if Santa isn't real does that mean other things aren't real too?" I was so flabbergasted by the question since as far as I knew, Santa was still a part of Brooke's reality. But since Ali was nearby, I asked her to hold her question for another time. But I totally forgot to talk to her about it until... text from Steph: "Santa isn't real?! What has Brooke been telling my daughter?" My heart sank! I was bummed that Brooke was growing up, but did NOT want her to be the one to break the big secret to others!

It turns out that about a month ago, Brooke went to Steve and asked him if Santa was real. Steve was not going to lie to his child so he told her the truth. But then he neglected to fill mommy in on the news. Brooke says she started to question Santa because she didn't believe a man who was alive so long ago (the real St. Nicholas) could still be alive today. She's so smart :) And then when she came to me a week ago it was because Uncle Joe told her Santa was real and so she was confused all over again. So we straightened out her beautiful, confused little mind and gave specific instructions about how to handle the Santa issue with other kids in the future. Meanwhile, Steph is loving that fact that despite Brooke telling Leann about Santa's secret, Leann still believes. You gotta love Leann for having so much innocent faith in all things magical and good.

I guess it's just a matter of time before we are left with a house where no one believes in the tooth fairy, the elf on the shelf, and good ole Santa Clause. It's a sad thought.
